Painting mainly still lifes in oils and working from life, I am inspired by forms, their interrelationships and how light and colour play across their surfaces. Remaining grounded in close observation and figuration, I am working to develop my practice away from reporting, towards a more intuitive investigation of shape, colour, tone and light. Above all the mystery and joy of perception and the power and beauty of colour keep me excited and compelled to paint.
I grew up in Cambridge and, after gaining a degree in History of Art, I then studied the conservation of prints and drawings at Camberwell. Following a career in conservation and working for the National Trust, I fulfilled a long held ambition to learn to draw and paint. Having recently moved from Suffolk to Lewes in East Sussex I am excited by my new environment and the artistic possibilities it offers.
Any opportunities to become involved with fellow artists and exhibitions would be welcomed, especially with Brighton's Open Houses.
