Artist’s description

My photographic practice begins with curiosity: an instinctive response to ordinary places, structures and objects, and the potential they hold to become strange, cinematic or unexpectedly important through framing and transformation.

I approach subjects almost as portraits, using composition, light, colour and negative space to draw attention to elements that might otherwise go unnoticed. I’m particularly drawn to architecture, infrastructure and peripheral spaces – places that seem to sit somewhere between the familiar and the uncanny. Sometimes their context remains visible; at other times it’s reduced, obscured or removed altogether, allowing the subject to take on a less specific identity.

The finished photograph develops through both the original encounter and post-production. I use digital manipulation freely and to varying degrees, allowing each image to evolve towards the atmosphere and form I have in mind. This might involve subtle refinement or more substantial intervention.

The aim is not necessarily to describe a place faithfully, but to create a heightened version of it, whether that be tranquil, mysterious, playful or cinematic.
