My work is an abstract exploration of my inner emotions, which can only be found through this medium. Often times they are a deeply personal and exposing experience to paint. My paintings are on wooden boards with oil and acrylic, ranging from large 70cm/2m rectangular boards, to smaller square boards also. My process involves layered paints and small mark making to form shapes and colours which make me, and hopefully the audience, feel something which cannot be expressed through words. I hope to disturb and to comfort myself and my audience through my art; often my paintings do not feel finished until they have been observed. They are given their meaning, and their intention through this observation.
This painting came after the death of my childhood dog. He began as I remembered him, and then slowly through the paintings process he turned into something that didn’t quite look alive. I feel a relief looking at this painting, because this is his new form, this is what he looks like now, this is his rebirth. When we don’t know where the things we love go after death, it is a beautiful thing to try and make sense of what they have become. He now brings life to other things, this I find comforting.
