Having completed a design degree at Edinburgh and subsequently pursued a 20 year design career in London, my current art inspiration has reconverged around my primary interest, colour. This attraction is driven by my synaesthesia and is entirely instinctual. Having ditched the corporate world of grey a decade or so ago, Brighton has helped me reemerge back into my natural habitat.
Born initially of a small collaboration with a fellow artist, I decided to use a 40×40 format to explore a variety of ’tiled’ layouts using mixed media. Keeping the physical parameters of my work to a manageable size, I focus on multiple combinations of colour to create striking panels with subtle optical effects. The initial textures and colours are created in acrylic, driven by play and experimental techniques inspired by both macro and aerial photography.
The outcome of those experiments then dictates the geometry used in the deconstruction and subsequent reassembly of the pieces, the value and depth of negative space, coordinated colour schemes and highlighted edges mainly using thread, to best show off the macro detail of the texture.
