I studied Ceramics at University of Brighton as a mature student completing my degree in 2007.
My ceramics are influenced by repetition and textures in nature, when you look close at landscape and organic objects it’s amazing how the symmetry and repeat patterns ‘sing’. They have influenced designs of the 50’s and 60’s which have stood the test of time and become iconic. These mid-century designs remind me of my childhood but it’s taken me to my maturity to appreciate.
Each piece of my work is handmade in my studio at home using the slab hand-built method, I print into the clay using stamps and rollers I make myself. All my planter work is fired to stoneware which makes them durable and for garden pots they are frost resistant.
My Organic and landscape wall pieces are hand printed from Lino cuts and are glazed in earthenware glazes for their brighter colours.
I make most of my own glazes and love the alchemy that happens in the kiln when two coloured glazes combine and change with the different clays I use. The making process is rewarding but when I open my kiln after a firing, that’s when the excitement and rewards set in.
